Pan-India star Rashmika Mandanna has officially signed on for the most ambitious project of her career, taking on the role of legendary Carnatic vocalist and Bharat Ratna recipient MS Subbulakshmi.

Titled M.S – A Legacy On Screen, the grand biopic was formally launched on Subbulakshmi’s 110th birth anniversary at the Music Academy in Chennai.

Legendary actor and director Kamal Haasan attended the high-profile ceremony to give the traditional first clap, officially kicking off production on the multi-language feature.

During the launch event, Haasan highlighted the extraordinary scale of responsibility placed on Mandanna’s shoulders.

Addressing the lead actress directly from the stage, Haasan compared her daunting task of embodying an immortal vocal icon to an actor preparing to portray Michael Jackson on the global screen.

He noted that portraying Subbulakshmi requires far more than dramatic line delivery because her legendary voice carries deep spiritual and emotional significance for generations of music lovers.

Adding a lighthearted moment that quickly went viral across social media, Haasan joked that he did not envy Mandanna because he could never pull off such a role himself, even if he shaved off his beard.

He assured the young star that capturing Subbulakshmi’s signature warmth and compassion in her eyes would win half the battle, encouraging her to approach the role with courage alongside her creative team.

He also praised Subbulakshmi as a true cultural unifier who bridged regional and linguistic divides across India through the timeless power of her music.

Visibly moved during the ceremony, Mandanna expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to honor the musical giant on screen.

She shared that listening to Subbulakshmi’s sacred renditions gives her a feeling of divine presence, promising fans that she will dedicate her full effort to honoring the singer’s lasting memory.

The emotional launch featured a live choir performance celebrating classic compositions that made Subbulakshmi a household name worldwide.

The ambitious film is directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, best known for his acclaimed sports drama Jersey, with hitmaker Anirudh Ravichander set to compose the original musical score.

Jointly produced by industry stalwarts Allu Aravind under Geetha Arts, Rockline Venkatesh under Rockline Entertainments, and Bunny Vasu under BV Works, the production is scheduled as a major pan-India cinematic release.

The biopic aims to trace Subbulakshmi’s remarkable journey from her early days in Madurai to becoming the first Indian musician to perform at the United Nations General Assembly and the first singer honored with India’s highest civilian award.

To capture this monumental narrative, the production team plans an extensive pre-production schedule focusing on period authenticity, classic saree drape aesthetics, and vocal lip-sync preparation.

Classical music historians and Subbulakshmi’s surviving disciples have been invited as creative consultants to preserve historical accuracy across every concert sequence.

By showcasing Subbulakshmi’s early silver screen roles like Meera alongside her spiritual devotion, the film highlights how her music transcended cultural boundaries.

As excitement builds across trade circles, M.S – A Legacy On Screen stands out as a landmark project celebrating Indian heritage, divine artistry, and female empowerment on a grand global scale.
