Protecting the final season of one of Netflix’s biggest shows from leaking turned out to require more than standard set security.
According to a report from SlashFilm, Stranger Things’ crew filmed certain outdoor scenes for Season 5 underneath tents, a direct response to fans using drones to fly over the set and capture unreleased footage.
The outlet cited a viral post from an account with more than 240,000 followers on X, one that reportedly also ran a paid subscription service offering early spoilers to fans willing to pay for them.
That wasn’t the only security challenge the production faced. During filming in August 2024, an anonymous hacker claimed to have obtained the first three episodes of the season and threatened to leak them online.
According to reporting from TechRadar and Soap Central. Netflix confirmed at the time that a post-production partner had been compromised, telling press, “Footage from several of our titles has unfortunately leaked online… our team is aggressively taking action to have it taken down.”
The threat followed a pattern Netflix had already dealt with on other titles, including some of its anime series, and it wasn’t the show’s only brush with a data breach, a separate incident was reported months later involving additional plot details and release information circulating online after another reported breach.
Even with those measures in place, some material still made it out ahead of schedule. In December 2025, shortly before the season’s later volumes were set to release.
A short clip circulated on X showing Sadie Sink’s character Max out of bed and seemingly alive in the real world, a detail fans immediately used to theorize about her fate heading into the final episodes, according to a report from The Tab.
One commenter on the leaked clip noted that the crew’s tent-based filming setup likely explained why so few Max-related leaks had surfaced up to that point.
The stakes behind all this were tied to how Stranger Things built its ending. The series wrapped filming in December 2024, and Netflix confirmed the news through its own social channels at the time.
Star Sadie Sink later described the final day of shooting as deeply emotional, telling Screen Rant at SXSW in March 2025 that it felt like “saying goodbye to your childhood” after eight years on the show.
The season was ultimately released in three parts, with Volume 1 arriving November 26, 2025, Volume 2 on Christmas Day, and the series finale on New Year’s Eve, which also received a limited theatrical release alongside its Netflix debut.
Looking back at the production’s approach to leaks says something about how differently major franchises now have to plan for release.
A show built around mystery and slow-burn reveals faced constant pressure from fans actively trying to uncover its secrets months before release, using everything from drone footage to paid leak subscriptions.
That the crew resorted to physically obscuring filming locations with tents reflects just how far that pressure pushed production teams to go, and it’s a detail that holds up as a genuinely unusual footnote in the show’s history now that the full season is out and the mystery it was protecting no longer needs protecting.
