SS Rajamouli marked August 9 by sharing a new first look poster of the actor as Rudhra, his character in the upcoming film Varanasi, posted directly to Rajamouli’s own account with the caption Fierce isn’t his only shade, Rudhra in Varanasi.

The image itself carries more information than a typical birthday post usually does.

It was shot during the film’s production schedule in Africa, and shows Rudhra in a rugged, outdoor look with zebras and giraffes visible in the background, placing the character firmly within the wilderness setting that has become one of the most talked about aspects of the production.

Multiple outlets covering the reveal, including ANI and Outlook India, confirmed the images came specifically from sequences filmed near Kilimanjaro and the Masai Mara.

It is worth being precise about what is actually confirmed at this point, since Varanasi has been surrounded by a long stretch of speculation since it was first announced.

The title itself is not a rumor. Rajamouli revealed Varanasi at a launch event in Hyderabad in January 2026, attended in person by the full core cast, where the film’s release date of April 7, 2027 was also confirmed, timed to coincide with the Ugadi festival.

Mahesh Babu plays Rudhra, Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays a character named Mandakini, and Prithviraj Sukumaran plays the film’s antagonist, Kumbha.

All three appeared together at that event, which puts the cast well past the level of an unconfirmed rumor.

What remains genuinely unconfirmed is the plot itself.

A synopsis describing an asteroid threat, a cosmic artifact, and a mission spanning Africa, Antarctica, and Europe has circulated widely online, but that description has been attributed specifically to entertainment outlet Gulte as an unofficial report rather than something Rajamouli’s team has stated directly.

Readers are better served treating the story details as unverified for now, even while the title, cast, and release date are treated as settled.

The Africa shoot itself is the part of this production that tends to get flattened into background detail, when it actually reveals something about how Rajamouli is approaching the film.

His earlier work, including the Baahubali films and RRR, relied heavily on digitally constructed environments for its large scale sequences.

Sending a production of this size to shoot extensively on location in Kenya and Tanzania, rather than recreating those landscapes through visual effects, suggests Varanasi is being built around real, in camera scale rather than purely digital spectacle, at least for its African sequences.

Today’s reveal also fits a pattern the production has followed for months. Priyanka Chopra Jonas received a similar treatment last month, when the team released two posters showing different sides of her character Mandakini to mark her own birthday.

Pairing major cast reveals with each actor’s birthday has become the production’s preferred way of feeding updates to fans without committing to a full trailer or detailed plot breakdown before the team is ready.

For Mahesh Babu personally, Varanasi represents a first time collaboration with Rajamouli after more than two decades as one of Telugu cinema’s biggest stars, a pairing fans have wanted for years.

Combined with a reported production that is roughly eighty percent complete as of this week, with the remaining footage expected to wrap by October, today’s poster functions less as a mystery box and more as a marker of how close the film actually is to finished, even with over half a year left before release.
