Spider-Man Just Had the Second-Biggest Movie Opening in Box Office History

Spider-Man Brand New Day did not just have a good opening weekend. Its finalized numbers now show it broke Avengers Endgame’s all time domestic opening weekend record outright, pulling in 360 million dollars against Endgame’s 357.1 million dollars, making it the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history.

The records started falling almost immediately and never really stopped. Thursday preview screenings, which included Amazon Prime Video members’ early access the night before, brought in 72 million dollars domestically, beating Endgame’s previous preview record of 60 million dollars.

Friday added 168 million dollars, the biggest single day domestic gross ever recorded, and Saturday brought in 101.5 million dollars, the second highest Saturday total of all time.

International markets pushed the film even further. Combined with an overseas haul that has since grown past 700 million dollars, the film’s worldwide total crossed 1 billion dollars by its second Tuesday in theaters, making it the second fastest film ever to reach that mark, trailing only Endgame.

What happened after opening weekend turned this into more than a single record breaking event. The film posted the biggest Monday in domestic box office history with 47 million dollars, then broke that record again the very next day with the biggest Tuesday ever at 42 million dollars.

By its fourth day it had already crossed 400 million dollars domestically, the fastest any film has done so, and by day seven it passed 500 million dollars domestically, again the fastest ever, edging out Endgame’s previous pace by a full day. Somewhere in that stretch it also passed Toy Story 5 to become the highest grossing film of 2026 worldwide.

India remained part of that global story. The film opened there to 60.60 crore net on its first day, around 7.5 million dollars, overtaking Endgame’s seven year old opening day record of 53.10 crore.

Notably, that record came from higher ticket prices rather than a bigger audience, since Endgame actually sold more tickets on its opening day than Brand New Day did.

The film’s performance across India was broad rather than concentrated, with new highs recorded in Kerala, Mysore, Bihar, Odisha, and several other circuits, even as traditionally dominant markets like Mumbai fell just short of their own Endgame era benchmarks.

Audience reception matched the commercial numbers. The film earned an A CinemaScore and a certified fresh 90 percent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 98 percent audience score, the highest audience score of any live action Spider-Man film to date, edging out even 2021’s No Way Home.

Context around the competition only made the numbers more remarkable. Brand New Day displaced The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s own blockbuster also starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, which had been holding the top box office spot for two weeks running.

Rather than folding under the pressure, The Odyssey posted its best weekend hold of Nolan’s career, dropping just over forty percent against a film breaking records around it, and has since crossed 1 billion dollars worldwide of its own.

By its fourth weekend it was closing in on Nolan’s second highest grossing domestic film ever, trailing only The Dark Knight.

The two films together pushed a single weekend to 434 million dollars in combined domestic grosses, a new all time record for any weekend at the box office, surpassing the 402.1 million dollar total set during Endgame’s original 2019 release.

One detail adds an unusual wrinkle to how these records were set. Brand New Day achieved its entire opening weekend and much of its first ten days without any IMAX screens, since Universal kept all of The Odyssey’s IMAX presentations locked in through September.

Spider-Man only began picking up IMAX and premium large format screens in its second weekend, meaning the record setting run so far happened under a real distribution constraint that could have pushed the numbers even higher under normal circumstances.

Heading into its second weekend, Brand New Day was projected to add another 143 million dollars domestically, which would rank as the third best second weekend in box office history, behind only Star Wars The Force Awakens and Endgame itself.

Whatever the final tally ends up being, the film has already moved past being measured against typical blockbusters and is now being measured, weekend after weekend, against the single biggest theatrical run in movie history.
