The 2 Rock Legends Who Underwent the Same Rare Vocal Surgery and the Doctor Behind It

Two of music’s most recognizable voices turned out to share something far more specific than fame: the same surgeon, the same procedure, and a friendship that started years before either of them needed it.

Shania Twain and Jon Bon Jovi first crossed paths on an international flight to Europe, long before either had any idea they’d eventually lean on each other for something as personal as vocal cord surgery.

As Twain has told it, the two simply bumped into each other in the aisle. Bon Jovi introduced himself, telling her he’d heard she had a reputation as the hardest-working artist in the industry, the same reputation, he said, that followed him.

Years later, that chance meeting became something more significant. Twain had developed vocal cord damage tied to Lyme disease, which she contracted in 2003; the illness led to a condition called dysphonia that put her singing career in jeopardy.

In 2018, she underwent vocal fold medialization surgery, a procedure performed by Dr. Robert Sataloff, chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine and one of the most well-regarded voice specialists for professional performers.

Bon Jovi’s issues surfaced separately, starting around 2015, though he didn’t pursue surgery until 2022. He’s described it as nerve atrophy affecting his voice, not the result of any vocal abuse, he’s joked publicly that the only thing that’s ever been up his nose is his own finger.

Facing what he called a choice between treatment and retirement, and after a difficult conversation with his wife Dorothea while on tour, he decided to seek help.

That’s when he learned, through Twain’s own public comments about her recovery, that they’d had the same surgery with the same doctor.

“She’s the only other one I’ve known that’s ever had this surgery, with this doctor,” Bon Jovi has said, “and the only reason I found that out is because she reported it in the press.”

He reached out to her directly for guidance before making his decision.

Twain didn’t sugarcoat what he was in for. The procedure is done with the patient awake, and she made sure he understood that going in.

“It’s an open-throat surgery, and you have to be awake,” she recalled telling him. “I just have to be honest with you because if you’re going into this, you’re going to hear it from the surgeon anyway, but you might as well hear it from somebody who’s been through it.”

She’s since admitted she may have undersold how long his recovery would take, joking that she suspected he might back out otherwise.

The procedure itself, formally called vocal fold medialization, involves placing a small implant, typically made of medical-grade Gore-Tex, behind the weakened vocal cord to bring it closer to the functioning one, allowing the voice to regain its resonance and closure.

Both artists have since returned to performing. Twain has continued her touring schedule and Las Vegas residencies, while Bon Jovi has worked through an ongoing recovery process involving vocal coaching and daily exercises, describing his voice as still a work in progress even years later.

In February 2024, Twain took the stage to perform “Bed of Roses” in his honor at the MusiCares Person of the Year gala, a full-circle moment for a friendship that started as a chance encounter and became something far more personal once both singers understood exactly what the other had been through.
