Jumanji’s New Trailer Flips the Franchise’s Entire Premise

Sony Pictures released the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World on July 28, and it inverts the mechanic that’s defined the rebooted franchise since 2017.

Rather than teenagers being pulled into the game, the trailer shows Jumanji itself breaking out of its console and into ordinary suburban life, unleashing its creatures and chaos directly into the real world.

Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan all return as their in-game avatars, Dr. Smoulder Bravestone, Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon, and Ruby Roundhouse, now facing a malfunctioning “demo mode” version of themselves in a world that was never built to hold them.

Director Jake Kasdan returns for what’s being billed as the trilogy’s final chapter, working from a screenplay by Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.

The trailer runs 3 minutes and 6 seconds and is set to Europe’s 1986 hit “The Final Countdown,” a fitting needle-drop for a franchise closing out a story that began with 2017’s Welcome to the Jungle.

Footage had already been shown once before this full trailer, at CinemaCon in April, where Jack Black told the crowd, “I’ve never had more fun working on a movie. This is my favorite so far.”

The returning teenage cast, Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, and Ser’Darius Blain, reprise their roles from the first two films, alongside franchise regulars Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, and Rhys Darby.

New additions to the cast include Lamorne Morris, Marin Hinkle, Brittany O’Grady, and Burn Gorman, expanding the real-world cast dealing with the game’s characters now loose in their neighborhood.

Sony also adjusted the release date as part of the trailer rollout. The film was previously scheduled for December 11, 2026, before shifting to December 25, positioning it as a Christmas Day theatrical release rather than a mid-December one.

Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level together grossed more than $1.7 billion worldwide, giving Sony a clear incentive to anchor the franchise’s conclusion in the same holiday window that’s worked for other major franchise finales.

One detail largely overlooked in coverage of the trailer connects this new film to a much older, mostly forgotten corner of the same source material.

Jumanji: Open World is technically the fourth film Sony has made based on author Chris Van Allsburg’s work, following the 1995 original, and it sits alongside a loose franchise cousin: 2005’s Zathura: A Space Adventure.

A Van Allsburg adaptation starring a young Kristen Stewart that functions as a spiritual spin-off of the original Jumanji story, though it’s rarely mentioned alongside the Johnson-led reboot trilogy.

It’s a small piece of franchise trivia that doesn’t affect the new film’s plot at all, but it’s a reminder that this story has been quietly expanding across three decades in ways most casual viewers have never connected.

What’s confirmed comes directly from the trailer’s July 28 release and matching statements from Sony: the reversed premise, the confirmed cast list, the shifted release date, and the film’s positioning as the trilogy’s closing chapter.

What remains to be seen is how the “demo mode” glitch concept plays out across a full feature rather than a three-minute trailer, and whether Sony’s holiday scheduling bet pays off the way it has for the franchise’s two prior installments.
