Kristen Stewart and Ashley Benson posed together for photos at Emma Roberts’ wedding to Cody John, a small moment that points to a bigger, mostly overlooked connection between two of the day’s most recognizable guests.

Roberts married John on July 25 in a summery outdoor ceremony at his family’s estate in Sun Valley, Idaho, with Stewart and Benson among the guests photographed at the celebration.

The two actresses, both 36, have moved in overlapping Hollywood circles for over a decade without ever actually starring in a project together.

But their connection to Roberts, and to each other, runs deeper than a shared friend group. Roberts was originally cast in the 2012 comedy Spring Breakers before dropping out of the project, she was replaced by Benson.

It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes swap that rarely gets revisited once a film comes out, but it quietly ties two of Roberts’ wedding guests together through a role one of them never ended up playing.

Spring Breakers went on to become something of a career turning point for Benson, part of an ensemble alongside Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez that leaned into a darker, more provocative register than the Disney and ABC Family projects most of the cast were known for at the time.

Roberts’ wedding day look drew its own attention separately. She wore a flowy, custom Monique Lhuillier gown featuring an asymmetrical neckline with lace detailing, paired with a sheer shawl.

Her veil included an unusual design choice: a long white veil finished with a mask-like feature that covered only her eyes, rather than a traditional full-face or shoulder-length style.

She later changed into a separate archival dress from the same designer for the reception, a detail that suggests real intention behind the day’s styling rather than a single look meant to carry the whole event.

The wedding capped a four-year relationship for Roberts and John, an actor known for Hulu’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga and The CW’s In the Dark.

The couple went public in August 2022, when John posted a photo kissing Roberts on Instagram captioned simply, “Sweet sweet.”

They announced their engagement in July 2024, when Roberts shared a photo showing off her ring with a caption joking, “putting this here before my mom tells everyone.”

This marks Roberts’ first marriage; she previously shared a long relationship with actor Evan Peters and later dated Garrett Hedlund, with whom she has a young son.

Benson and Stewart’s presence at the wedding fits a pattern of overlapping friendships that’s followed both actresses for years, evident in the guest lists of each other’s major life events.

Benson and her husband, Brandon Davis, were also among the guests at Stewart’s own wedding to Dylan Meyer this past April, held at a Los Angeles restaurant.

That earlier wedding photo set showed Meyer in an off-white minidress with a sheer top and satin skirt, and Stewart in a gray miniskirt and blouse set, a contrast to the more casual white shirt, tie, and shorts look she wore to Roberts’ wedding this time.

Benson herself married Davis in a separate ceremony, and the recurring presence of the same small circle, Roberts, Stewart, Benson, and their respective partners, across each other’s weddings points to a friend group that’s stayed close through a decade of overlapping fame, breakups, and new relationships.

Stewart and Benson’s own history goes back further than either of their marriages. Both built early careers on very different sides of the industry.

Stewart through the Twilight franchise and a run of independent dramas, Benson through Pretty Little Liars and youth-oriented television, before their paths crossed more directly through the same expanding Los Angeles social circle that includes Roberts.

None of the three have ever shared a screen credit together, despite years of overlapping industry events, award shows, and now, each other’s weddings.

None of this makes Stewart and Benson’s appearance at Roberts’ wedding surprising on its own, they’re clearly part of the same longtime friend group.

What’s more interesting is the specific thread connecting all three women professionally: a decade-old casting swap that never became a talking point until now, resurfacing only because two once-linked actresses happened to stand next to each other for a photo at a mutual friend’s wedding.

It’s a reminder that even well-covered celebrity events can carry a quieter backstory that only becomes visible once someone traces the connections between the people actually standing in the photo.
