Taylor Swift’s NYC Wedding Permit: What the Reported $160,000 Payment Actually Covered

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding at Madison Square Garden attracted widespread attention for its guest list and private setting. It also raised questions about the logistics of hosting a large private event in the middle of Manhattan.

One of the biggest questions centered on the reported cost of the city’s event permit and the security response surrounding the venue.

According to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Swift paid the city more than $160,000 to cover the event permit and the municipal response required for the wedding.

Speaking during a July 10 consumer protection press conference, Mamdani said the payment covered both the permit itself and the city’s operational response, including street management and police deployment around Madison Square Garden.

“Taylor Swift has paid already the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event,” Mamdani said.

His remarks were reported by The Hollywood Reporter, ABC News, and Rolling Stone, making them the clearest public explanation so far of what the payment included.

The reported total differs from earlier estimates published before city officials commented publicly.

TMZ previously reported that Swift’s team paid approximately $60,000 to close part of Seventh Avenue near Madison Square Garden.

Earlier reporting by The New York Times estimated permit-related expenses at roughly $132,000. Mamdani’s statement appears to reflect the broader cost of the permit together with the city’s operational response, explaining why the publicly reported figures are not identical.

That distinction is important because the various reports describe different portions of the overall planning process rather than necessarily contradicting one another.

Hosting a large private event in Midtown Manhattan typically requires coordination among event organizers, the venue, the New York City Police Department and multiple city agencies.

Depending on the event, organizers may need permits for temporary street closures, traffic management, public safety measures and other operational requirements.

City officials have not suggested that the permitting process used for Swift and Kelce’s wedding was unusual. Instead, the event appears to have followed established procedures used for major private gatherings requiring extensive security and traffic planning.

Separate reporting has also highlighted the broader cost of staging the celebration itself.

The New York Times estimated that reserving Madison Square Garden for the two-day event likely cost between $1.2 million and $1.6 million, while production expenses, including staging, lighting, catering and décor, could have pushed the overall event budget significantly higher.

Those figures, however, remain published estimates rather than official financial disclosures.

The ceremony took place on July 3 and, according to the couple’s representative, welcomed roughly 1,000 guests. Austin Swift served as his sister’s man of honor, while Jason Kelce was his brother’s best man.

Numerous entertainers, athletes and public figures were photographed arriving throughout the day, although organizers kept much of the celebration private.

The discussion surrounding the wedding has since extended beyond the ceremony itself. Public interest has focused on how an event of this scale was organized inside one of New York City’s busiest neighborhoods and what level of coordination was required between organizers and city agencies.

Although some financial details remain estimates reported by news organizations, one point is now publicly confirmed. According to Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Taylor Swift paid more than $160,000 to cover the city’s permit and operational response for the event.

Beyond that confirmation, many aspects of the wedding’s planning and overall cost remain private, and neither Swift nor Kelce has publicly discussed the logistical arrangements in detail.
