Google’s Love Island Winner Prediction Was Wrong

Love Island USA Season 8 ended July 12 with Trinity Tatum and Bryce Dettloff crowned as the season’s winners, splitting the show’s $100,000 prize after receiving the highest share of the public vote.

Host Ariana Madix announced the result at the close of the finale, which aired on Peacock.

The announcement came with a notable change from previous seasons. In past finales, the winning couple has opened one of two envelopes, one containing the $100,000 prize and one empty, with whoever drew the prize then deciding whether to keep it or split it with their partner.

Trinity and Bryce first coupled up during the show’s June 2 premiere, became an official couple during Episode 24, and remained together through Casa Amor before reaching the finale together.

Separately, hours before the finale aired, some fans encountered a different, incorrect result altogether.

According to reporting from The Mirror US, Google’s AI Overview search feature displayed Aniya Harvey and Carl Schmidt as the season’s winners in response to searches, despite no official announcement having been made yet.

Screenshots of the incorrect result spread across social media, prompting confusion among viewers who questioned whether the finale had leaked. Google later corrected the result, but not before it had already circulated widely.

That error had a real consequence worth noting directly: at least one entertainment website published an article stating Aniya and Carl were the actual Season 8 winners, apparently treating the incorrect AI-generated search result as a confirmed outcome rather than verifying it against the finale itself.

That’s a concrete example of exactly the risk that AI-generated search summaries can pose during fast-moving live events, incorrect information spreading not just among casual searchers, but into published coverage that treats an unverified snippet as settled fact.

Following the finale, Peacock confirmed the Season 8 reunion special will air August 31, hosted again by Ariana Madix alongside Andy Cohen.

The network also confirmed Love Island: Beyond the Villa, a spinoff following former contestants after leaving the villa, has already been renewed for a third season, set to premiere in 2027.

What’s confirmed is straightforward: Trinity Tatum and Bryce Dettloff won Season 8 and split the $100,000 prize without the traditional envelope segment, a change Peacock hasn’t explained.

Separately, and independently of the actual result, Google’s AI Overview briefly displayed the wrong couple as winners before the finale aired, an error serious enough that it appears to have misled at least one news outlet into reporting it as fact.
